S2E3 Keeping it Real with Couples Therapy

Have you ever found yourself typing into Google, “Couples counseling near me?” but didn’t know how to bring it up to your partner? Is communication an issue in your relationship? Maybe there is something about your partner you just don’t get, or maybe they are having a hard time understanding something about you.

When beginning therapy, conflict within an intimate romantic relationship is one of the leading underlining issues emphasized by clients (there is a reason counselors include relationship status on an intake form).

Let’s be honest with each other- relationships can be HARD! Out of the billions of people in the world we pick one person (or multiple throughout our lifetime) who, as guest Amy Dickson brilliantly interprets, “We choose to fight with for the rest of our lives.”

Relationships have a direct and intense way of impacting our wellness, and research has proven romantic encounters can alter our emotions, self-esteem, and image. A partner tends to influence our values and when we are in long-term relationships, it is normal to feel a sense of security and ease.

Our partner is who we decide to build and maintain a lifestyle with and even the person we (sometimes) decide to raise children with.

Yet, with time, so many of us unknowingly begin to treat a relationship more like a business transaction and less like the romantic connection it began as.

So what happens when this business is faced with difficult times? How do we balance the ever-trying family/work/pleasure/reality/kids/finances/home/mental health/spouse life?

It is easy to take our daily stressors and frustrations out on our partner, but have we ever stopped to take a second and wonder why we do this? I mean, come on, this is the person we have chosen to love and be loved by unconditionally- why do we lash out and use pain as an argument tactic? (Trust us, the answer is so much more simple and more common than you might think!).

Join me and guest Amy Dickson as we dive deeper into these concepts and questions. This is an engaging and raw episode offering plenty of techniques, advice, and insight. Be Well!

No matter the duration or current status of your relationship (heck, even if you are single) this episode has something for you! From communication techniques to understanding conflict resolution and working through deeper analysis of the self to better a common goal, we’ve got you covered!
